A baseball writer but fantasy baseball rookie, Sam Walker enters Tout Wars, the elite fantasy baseball league, his very first time out. This book recaps his year, discusses a bit of history, brings the reader right along with all the tension and over-analysis. Walker actually hires two guys to help him with his team: Nando , humanist in the style of an old-school scout, and Sig, a NASA rocket scientist who spends his free time developing data models for baseball statistics. Nando and Sig represent the two sides of a tug of war currently going on in the front offices of major league baseball teams. It?s not a little intriguing seeing this battle echoing large and small within Walker?s team, the Tout Wars league, in Walker?s conversations with major league GMs and baseball players. Walker?s prose is less poetic than he seems to imagine, but his writing is intriguing, very readable and gives this little nerd niche game surprising drama and depth.

Of course I no longer think the game?s nerdy and niche. Well, maybe nerdy but a lot bigger niche than I figured. Did I mention that I was playing in my first fantasy baseball league this year?
